Vera wears an outfit representing her Dutch ancestry.
My best guess is that the family visited an old Dutch farm around South Holland, Illinois or near Lockport sometime in the 1890s, where they could see how their Dutch ancestors lived.
Our Vandenburghs were city-dwellers, so this was a novelty rather than a norm.
